The Friends of the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library are inviting families to stock up on children’s books while supporting free books for kids across Barren County.
The group is hosting a one-day, buy-one-get-one book sale on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the library lobby at 1530 S Green St in Glasgow.
At the sale, children’s books will be available at the regular price of 50 cents each, but for this event only, shoppers can buy one and get one free. Organizers say the sale will be cash only.
According to the Friends of the Library, proceeds from the lobby sale will be contributed to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Kentucky.
That program helps mail free books to children in Barren County, giving local families access to more early literacy materials at home.
Last year, the Friends agreed to partner with the library, Barren County Schools, Glasgow Independent Schools and Barren County Fiscal Court to help fund the Imagination Library program.
Funds raised by the Friends are matched by United Way of Southern Kentucky and the Kentucky General Assembly, which helps pay for shipping the books to Barren County children at no cost to their families.
With this year’s sale, the Friends say they hope to donate another $1,500 to support the partnership.
They’re asking community members to help by shopping the lobby sale, or making direct monetary donations.
Supporters may write checks payable to the Friends of the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library with a notation of “DPIL.”
Checks can be mailed to the Friends at 1530 S Green St., Glasgow, KY 42141, or dropped off at the library desk during the sale or any time the library is open.
Library officials say the event is just the first chance to browse materials cleared out during the recent inventory.
All other discarded books will be available at a larger fall book sale scheduled for Oct. 15-19.
