Students at Barren County High School and Trojan Academy are kicking off the school year by leading a new push for seat belt safety.
The student-led “Rock the Belt” campaign is designed to encourage teens and community members to buckle up every time they get into a vehicle.
The effort was launched by the Barren County SADD Club as a back-to-school safety campaign.
Club members say they want to raise awareness about the number of Kentucky teens who lose their lives in motor vehicle crashes.
As part of Rock the Belt, students in Mr. Spiller’s health classes took part in a hands-on “Quick Click Challenge.”
Using parked vehicles, students were timed as they moved between four different seats and practiced how quickly they could buckle their seat belts.
Organizers say the activity gave students a fun way to reinforce a serious message.
They want buckling up to feel automatic every time students get into a car, whether they are driving or riding.
The campaign is not limited to the classroom.
Students at both Barren County High School and Trojan Academy have been challenged to post a seat belt selfie on social media using the hashtag #RocktheBelt.
They are encouraging their friends to do the same to spread the message even further.
Carrie Fisher, the Barren County High School Youth Service Center coordinator, said Rock the Belt is about students reminding other students that something as simple as putting on a seat belt can save a life.
She said organizers want that decision to become a habit every single time students get into a vehicle.
Through the campaign, SADD members say they hope to create a ripple effect that reaches beyond their campuses.
They hope the message will influence students, parents and families throughout the Barren County community.
