The Barren County Family YMCA will celebrate the opening of its new Senior Wing with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and a broad group of local and regional leaders.
Officials say the 30-minute ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Barren County Family YMCA, located at 1 YMCA Way in Glasgow.
According to the YMCA, Gov. Beshear will deliver special remarks before joining city, county, state and regional leaders, YMCA representatives, donors and community partners for the ceremonial ribbon cutting.
The new Senior Wing is designed as a dedicated space for senior wellness and fitness activities, congregate meals, educational opportunities and social engagement.
YMCA officials say the goal is to help older adults remain active, healthy and connected to the community.
The space is open to seniors throughout the community and is not limited to YMCA members.
In a prepared statement, Gov. Andy Beshear said the Barren County Family YMCA has created an “incredible space” for older adults to stay active together by getting their steps in and staying social.
He said all of Kentucky’s seniors deserve this kind of support after spending their lives building up their communities, and added that his administration is focused on fighting hunger, expanding access to senior meals and protecting health care coverage and rural hospitals.
Tara Bailey, CEO and executive director of the Barren County Family YMCA, said the Senior Wing represents more than an addition to the building.
She said it is an investment in the health, independence and quality of life of older adults in Barren County, and she thanked Gov. Beshear, the City of Glasgow, the Barren River Area Development District, elected officials, donors, board members and community partners for their support.
The project is supported by $750,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Officials say the Barren River Area Development District was instrumental in submitting and managing the grant and has been an important partner in senior nutrition and services.
The expansion builds on the YMCA’s longstanding commitment to serving older adults through fitness, wellness and nutrition programs, including a partnership with BRADD to provide senior meals.
Leaders say the new Senior Wing will allow those services to operate in a space tailored to seniors’ needs and create additional opportunities for future programming as the community’s older adult population continues to grow.
