Eight people have been indicted after what authorities describe as an eight-month investigation into an alleged organized criminal syndicate that brought contraband into the Todd County Detention Center. One of those indicted is presently incarcerated in Barren County
The indictments were issued by a Todd County grand jury earlier this month following an extended investigation into suspected criminal activity tied to the jail, according to the Elkton Police Department.
The alleged syndicate involved incarcerated inmates working with individuals outside the detention center to introduce contraband to people in custody.
In Barren County, 39-year-old Tyrell Ellis, identified as being held at the Barren County Detention Center, has been charged in connection with the case.
Ellis faces counts of engaging in organized crime-criminal syndicate, complicity to trafficking a second-degree controlled substance, second offense, conspiracy to promoting contraband in the first degree and being a first-degree persistent felony offender.
Law enforcement agencies from multiple jurisdictions are involved.
The Elkton Police Department is leading the investigation into the alleged contraband ring.
The Todd County Sheriff’s Office, the Todd County Detention Center, the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Barren County Sheriff’s Office and the Barren County Detention Center have assisted, according to officials.
Six others indicted are in the Todd County Detention Center, and one is listed being in Leitchfield.
Additional indictments and arrests are expected as the investigation continues, indicating the case could expand beyond the initial eight people charged, according to the Elkton police.
