Mary Wood Weldon library closing through end of month for first full inventory since ’04

STAFF REPORT
Glasgow News 1

The Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library in Glasgow is closing for more than two weeks as staff complete what officials say is the first full inventory of the collection since 2004.

Library leaders say the building will be closed from Aug. 13 through Aug. 31 while employees work through shelves of books, movies and other materials that patrons can check out.

Library Director Amy Sandell said that staff members will be doing a top-to-bottom count of items in the collection.

She said the library has not closed for a full inventory in many years and estimated the work should take a couple of weeks.

Sandell said the process includes checking the status of items in the catalog and deciding what to do with materials that are damaged.

According to Sandell, items that are in very bad shape will be discarded.

She said materials that are only slightly damaged are often turned over to the Friends of the Library for their book sales.

Sandell added that the library works to keep up with new releases and patron requests so that popular titles are available.

While the building is closed, in-person borrowing and onsite services will not be available until the inventory is finished at the end of August.

The closing will not effect programs hosted by the library or online services such as ebooks and online audio books.

Officials encourage residents to plan ahead for their reading and viewing needs during the closure period.
