Tractor Supply Co. plans to close 75 Petsense locations nationwide, and the Petsense store in Glasgow is among the sites set to shut down.
The decision was discussed on the company’s Thursday, July 23, earnings call, where executives outlined a strategy to pull back from underperforming stores and shift money into higher-return initiatives.
Tractor Supply operates both its namesake Tractor Supply stores and the smaller-format Petsense brand, which focuses on pet supplies and services.
The 75 Petsense locations targeted for closure represent just over a third of the Petsense fleet.
On the earnings call, CEO Hal Lawton said the decision was driven by store performance and how much cash each location was generating or losing.
Lawton said the 75 stores being closed have what he called negative four-wall cash flow, meaning the stores are not bringing in enough money to cover their own operating expenses.
He said closing those sites will stop the losses and allow Tractor Supply to take that money and reinvest it back into the core of the business.
At the same time, Tractor Supply is continuing to chase a larger share of the pet market.
Company officials say they are expanding the selection of dog and cat food, along with livestock feed and animal supplies, at Tractor Supply-branded stores.
For shoppers in Glasgow, the closure means fewer local options for pet products.
Tractor Supply has not publicly detailed the exact timing of when the Glasgow Petsense location will close, or the ramifications for store employees.
