Highway safety work on a busy stretch of U.S. 31-E in Barren County is expected to begin this week, bringing daytime lane closures and several safety upgrades.
According to transportation officials, the Highway Safety Improvement Project will affect U.S. 31-E, Scottsville Road, from near J. Carter Road at mile point 8 to near the Louie B. Nunn Cumberland Expressway at mile point 12.
Motorists traveling through this corridor should prepare for daytime lane closures while crews are working.
Project plans call for drainage improvements at several locations along the U.S. 31-E work zone.
Officials say that work is intended to help manage water along the roadway and improve driving conditions, especially during and after heavy rain.
A new turn lane will be added on U.S. 31-E at Windy Hills Road as part of the project.
That change is expected to give drivers a dedicated space to slow down and turn, reducing the potential for rear-end crashes in the main travel lanes.
Minor roadway widening also will be completed throughout the corridor.
The widening will create a 4-foot centerline buffer between opposing travel lanes, which transportation officials describe as a safety enhancement designed to lower the risk of head-on collisions.
In addition to the safety features, the roadway will be resurfaced throughout the project area.
Resurfacing is expected to provide a smoother ride and extend the life of the pavement on this section of U.S. 31-E.
Officials are urging drivers to use caution, watch for workers and equipment in the area, and be prepared for delays or slower traffic while the project is underway.
The Highway Safety Improvement Project is expected to continue until later this year, and motorists may want to consider adjusting travel times or using alternate routes when possible during daytime work hours.
