A student-led club at Caverna High School aims to erase the stigma behind mental health issues. The SMILE Club gives students the opportunity to get together and talk about these important topics.

Steven Prybylla, suicide prevention coordinator for Caverna Independent Schools, spoke to WCLU Radio on Monday about the club. He said the students discuss ways they can help others and spread happiness.

“The kids just love thinking about how they can make other people happy,” Prybella said. “And that makes me happy to see.”

Prybylla said the Rae of Sunshine foundation, which originated in Springfield, Kentucky, has given Caverna the opportunity to begin the SMILE club.

Rae of Sunshine’s mission is “to spread light, love and hope by breaking the stigma surrounding mental health,” according to the foundation. “Through acts of kindness, educational outreach and community engagement,” the foundation aims “to empower individuals to share their stories, support one another and prioritize emotional well-being.”
