The National Weather Service in Louisville has issued a winter storm watch beginning Saturday morning. The watch includes Barren, Allen, Hart, Edmonson, and Hart counties in south central Kentucky.

“A winter storm is expected to bring moderate to major impacts…. Periods of moderate to heavy snow are forecast this weekend with the possibility of a wintry mix of snow and sleet across southern Kentucky,” the weather service stated.

“Plan for considerable disruptions to daily life, be prepared for dangerous travel conditions and ready to avoid travel if possible,” the weather service stated.

This watch follows a cold front that dropped a wintry mix on counties north of Barren, including Hart. The icy conditions near Munfordville caused the closure of Interstate 65, according to information from Kentucky State Police Post 4. The roadway was closed for several hours, and there were multiple non-injury crashes in the area.

As for the weekend forecast, the weather service stated, “A significant winter storm is expected this weekend. Heavy snow and cold temperatures are possible, but forecast confidence in snowfall amounts and detailed timing remains low.”
