The addition to the Barren County Area Technology Center is inching towards reality as the members of the Barren County Board of Education Local Planning Committee convened on Aug. 11 to officially add it to the district’s facility plan.

The meeting was brief with the singular focus on adding the ATC addition to the district’s facility plan, which is Barren County Schools “comprehensive review and evaluation of [its] facilities that is prepared every four years… and is the determinate of a district’s Needs Calculation and the trigger for expending restricted construction funds,” according to the Kentucky Department of Education.

“Very simply, KDE will not complete a project unless it is on your district facility plan [and] because the district just received the grant obviously they didn’t know they were going to have that money for this addition…, so now that they do we need to do a finding, which is a minor revision,” said Allison Commings with the architectural firm Sherman Carter Barnhart.

Commings said the schematic designs for the addition would go before the school district’s board of education members during their regular meeting on Aug. 14 for their approval before submitting it to the department of education.

With something “as involved” as new construction, Commings said the department usually requires three submittals. Construction is planned to begin in spring 2026.

This addition was made possible through a $4.2 million grant Barren County Schools received earlier this year. It will house the industrial maintenance pathway, according to Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Scott Harper.
