The Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library kicks off its summer reading program with a celebration from 10 a.m. to noon this Saturday at the library.

During this free event, community members of all ages will have the opportunity to decorate and customize canvas tote bags, bookmarks and buttons, as well as sign up for the library’s summer reading program, which encourages participants to read books while earning various prizes.

Krista Jones said this year’s reading program has an art theme, with multiple art projects and activities throughout the summer.

“We’re going to have an end-of-the-summer art show on July 31,” said Jones, the library’s youth services manager. She added that the event will include art projects that are created between now and then. “We’re going to display all the art in the library and we hope everyone can come in and look at what all the artists have created.”

On Thursday afternoon, Reagan Theppharaksa sat in the library and read a book. The 9-year-old said she really enjoys participating in the summer reading program every year.

“It was really fun just having to read a lot,” she said, adding that her favorite books to read are from Rachel Renee Russell’s “Dork Diaries” series. She said she enjoys reading because of all “the fun things you can find.”

Amy Tollison, adult services manager at the library, said they first began this reading program “as a way to help kids from sliding in their summer reading and their reading in between the school year.”

While area youth are encouraged to join the summer reading program, it isn’t just for kids, as adults can also participate.

“Libraries are for everyone,” Jones said. “All ages.”

Tollison added that one of the library’s goals is to make “a literate community that loves books.”

“I think it’s fun for adults to get to participate.”
