Steven Murphy is back for his third stint as head coach of the Glasgow softball program.
Murphy said Thursday morning he decided it was time to return to coaching because his children are out of school and out of athletics.
“The main thing is I got out years ago because of my children,” he said. “The coaching part of it you think about all the time.”
His desire to be a head coach never wained, Murphy said, but he stepped away in 2019 because his daughter Caroline was competing in track, and he didn’t want to miss her events. The high school softball and track seasons are both in the spring.
He first took over the program in 2008 and coached for two seasons before stepping away for a year to be an elementary school principal. He returned to the program in 2010 and stayed until 2019. The Lady Scotties won the 15th District title in 2012, beating Allen County-Scottsville 1-0 in the championship game.
The Glasgow program has struggled in recent seasons. The Lady Scotties won five games this past season and six in 2024.
Murphy said despite the lack of wins, he was impressed by how the players competed this past season, especially in the district tournament game. The Lady Scotties lost to Barren County, 8-7, in nine innings.
“I see similarities to when I took over in 2008,” he said. “We had five middle schoolers starting. You don’t want to have middle school players competing in varsity, but it’s what you have to do sometimes.”
He said that first season was a struggle, but, “the following year we turned the corner,” and won 22 games.
It will be a challenge in the 15th District, Murphy conceded, competing against Allen, Barren County and Warren East. Each of those teams posted more than 20 wins in 2025.
“You know you are gonna have your hands full,” he said. “We are gonna have to work at being competitive in the district.” He said it helps that the players “seem like they really enjoy the game.”
“I am excited to be back and look forward to getting to work,” Murphy said. He added there will be a team meeting Tuesday, June 10, at the high school.
