UPDATE: Glasgow’s Jerrick Martin joined the list of area athletes who have won state track and field titles. He won the Class 1A long jump state title with a leap of 22-feet, 9.5-inches in Lexington. His distance would have won the state title in any of the three classes of competition.

UPDATE: Caroline Murphy added to her state list with the 2023 Class 2A State Track and Field Meet. She won both the girls 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles in Lexington. The list below has been updated with her victories.

Taylor Ogles and Caroline Murphy became the latest state champs at our local schools. They each won the high jump in their respective state meets over the weekend, and joined a rather short list of state title winners in track and field at Barren County, Glasgow and Caverna.

It struck me as I prepared to have them on the Brown Sports Bag that they may be the first state high jump winners for either of their schools. That turned out to be true. Then the next question that sprang to my mind was, “How many state track winners have our schools had?”

The answer, according to the Kentucky High School Activities Association website, is below.

The lists have been updated to include Barren County athletes who won titles prior to the consolidation of Barren County’s schools.

Some notes about the lists below. I could not find the names of the Caverna relay team members from 1996. Also, Danny Honeycutt, who won two state titles in hurdles for Hiseville, is the grandfather of Caroline Murphy. Finally, track events were measured in yards prior to the conversion to the metric system in the late 1970s.
