In front of the blue pinwheels and the Barren County Courthouse, county judge-executive Jamie Bewley Byrd signed a proclamation designating April as child abuse prevention month.
Child abuse prevention month has been observed during April since its first presidential proclamation in 1983, according to Byrd’s proclamation that also states child abuse is a “community problem” with a solution that relies on “the involvement of social services, law enforcement, schools, religious communities, businesses and civic organizations.”
Barren County Family Judge Mica Pence said adults have to increase their willingness to reach out to one another if they suspect child abuse and building the necessary support systems.
“We have to make greater efforts to reach out,” Pence said. “Some of the things that can actually prevent child abuse are other adults supporting [each other]. Having a support system [as a parent] is really important. We can all do something to prevent child abuse, and sometimes it can be as simple as an encouraging word.”
After the brief remarks and proclamation signing, members from local schools, law enforcement officers, city and county officials, and several others marched around the Glasgow Square.
