Hart County Fiscal Court Meeting Discusses Storm Shelters and New Property Acquisition

May 29, 2024 | 11:12 PM

At Tuesday’s Fiscal Court meeting, significant developments were announced regarding the county’s efforts to enhance public safety and expand community facilities.

Judge-Executive Joe Choate provided details on plans to increase the availability of storm shelters for residents, with a new shelter to be established near the Rescue Squad building. This initiative aims to improve emergency preparedness and provide residents with safer options during severe weather events.

In addition to the storm shelter discussion, another major announcement was made after the court returned from a closed session. The county has acquired a 52.5-acre property to support its growing needs.

Judge-Executive Choate thanked Senator David Givens’ Office for its efforts in assisting with funding to acquire the land and highlighted several potential uses for the newly acquired land, including the development of a new senior center, a food bank, and an extension office. Moreover, the proximity of the property to Caverna High School opens up possibilities for the school’s expansion.

The land was purchased with the help of federal funding at $20,000 an acre, bringing the total to just over $1 million.

These initiatives reflect the court’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for Hart County residents and addressing both immediate and long-term community needs. Further details and timelines for these projects are expected to be discussed in upcoming meetings.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and participate in future court sessions to share their input on these important community developments.
