Glasgow Police Dept Partners with Flock Safety

Oct 25, 2023 | 12:34 PM

(10/24/2023) Glasgow, KY — The Glasgow Police Department is excited to announce we have partnered with Flock Safety, a company that provides an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) service. The Glasgow Police Department currently has 6 cameras.

These cameras provide officers with real time data to capture the make, model, color and license plate from the rear of vehicles traveling throughout our city. They capture actionable evidence and send real time alerts if a wanted or stolen vehicle passes by these cameras. The alerts are sent to every Glasgow Police Officer within seconds.

The cameras are not used for traffic enforcement, they do not take photos of the vehicle occupants and there is no facial recognition technology. Additionally, when new technology is introduced there is generally a question whether it’s tracking citizen movement. This system is not, the data is securely stored in the cloud, automatically deleted every 30 days on a rolling basis and is not sold or shared with third parties.

Glasgow Police Officers will be able to use this system for both proactive and reactive crime fighting. This system will also provide valuable information when officers investigate crime, providing much needed leads to help solve a number of criminal offenses.

The Flock Safety cameras are just one more tool to assist Glasgow Police Officers to help solve and prevent crime. This partnership will allow Glasgow Police to continue to deliver superior law enforcement service for our residents, businesses and visitors to uphold our mission statement.

Chief Guy Howie states “since the implementation on September 11, 2023, our six cameras have captured well over 600,000 license plates readings. The Flock LPR system has enabled our agency to be able to recover one stolen vehicle, three stolen license plates, two arrest warrants served, six drug related charges were filed and one firearm seized. Without these cameras, it is possible that these individuals would not have been charged for these offenses. In particular, one of the stolen license plate alerts led to the arrest of a previously convicted felon for trafficking in methamphetamine (2nd Offense) after they were found to be in possession of 1.4 ounces of methamphetamine and a handgun at a local hotel.

And over this past weekend, an individual was located and arrested after a Flock alert was sent out after the suspect’s vehicle was captured on the camera system. This individual had been wanted in connection with the disappearance of a juvenile female that had left with the male from a local school. The Flock cameras have been crucial in identifying vehicles of interest that have been involved in shoplifting incidents, vehicle accidents and other types of criminal investigations. Our officers have taken great interest in this system and its use in our agencies criminal investigations will continue to increase”.
