Central Kentucky murder investigation ensues after 3 found dead

VINE GROVE, Ky. — State police say a man has been charged in connection the bludgeoning of three people and two dogs in central Kentucky.

Authorities in Breckinridge County responded Wednesday evening to a home along High Plains Road in reference to a welfare check. Police found three people dead at the property. Two women were inside the house and a man was found outside. All three appeared to have wounds from blunt force trauma.

Police identified the women as Audrey Whealan, 77, and Michelle Whealan, 51, both of Vine Grove. The man was identified as Doss Smothers, 58, also of Vine Grove. Two dogs inside the house were dead, according to a news release.

Police arrested Tyler Wehmeyer, 28, in connection to the murders. He was charged with three counts of murder, tampering with physical evidence and second degree cruelty to animals. He remains lodged at the Breckinridge County Detention Center.

The investigation into the murders continues.
