CAVE CITY — Police in Cave City arrested a man Monday after he allegedly attempted to enter Caverna Elementary with a knife.

Josh Neal, the school resource officer, received a complaint from personnel at Caverna Elementary. They detailed how a man was attempting to open the rear doors of the school and gain access to it.

Police identified the man as 29-year-old Devan M. Howard. They observed an open switch blade-style knife in his waistline. Howard fled from police after they removed the knife from his waistband, a news release said.

Howard fled the scene on foot and was later apprehended about a half mile behind the school. He was taken into custody without further incident.

The school was placed on lockdown for the safety of students and faculty. They were advised to resume normal functions once the man was taken into custody.

A K-9 alerted on Howard’s vehicle. Police located suspeced marijuana inside the vehicle, which was parked at the school’s parking lot. Howard also allegedly had crystal methamphetamine and suspected marijuana on his person.

Howard faces a slew of charges including public intoxication, fleeing or evading police and several drug charges. He remains lodged at the Barren County Detention Center.
