GLASGOW — Glasgow City Clerk Mona Simmons was named as the newest vice president of the Barren River Municipal Clerks Association.
Glasgow City Hall released the information on Tuesday afternoon. Simmons has served as Glasgow’s city clerk since February 2019.
“I want to make my friend Tommie Birge proud,” Simmons said. “I always have her in the back of my mind.”
The late Birge was the first city clerk of Glasgow to become certified as a Kentucky Municipal Clerk. Simmons said she was a large part of her success when she became city clerk of Glasgow in 2019.
Simmons is also a member of the Barren River Municipal Clerks Association by-laws committee. The committee recently garnered support to change their by-laws to better mirror the Kentucky Municipal Clerks Association, according to a news release from the city of Glasgow.
Atop her position as vice-president, Simmons continues to pursue the “Master Municipal Clerk” designation. She became the second city clerk here to attain the level of certified municipal clerk. That designation required three years of training through the Kentucky Municipal Clerks Association and Kentucky League of Cities.
“It’s a bunch,” Simmons said. “It takes a long time.”
Simmons was hired to work under former Glasgow Mayor Harold Armstrong. She now serves in Mayor Henry Royse’s administration.
