GLASGOW — For the first time in 23 years, the voice of Glasgow Scottie and Lady Scottie basketball will change hands.

Joe Myers was bestowed the title of the ‘Voice of the Scotties’ over 20 years ago. He said he felt like it was time for him to back off a little bit with his play-by-play duties.

“I sure hope to continue to be able to do football, baseball, and softball, for many years to come,” Myers said, “but basketball season – it’s a long season quite honestly. And I just kind of needed a break and I just feel like it’s the right time to do that.”

Myers will pass the reigns to Shawn Murnin, a Pennsylvania native and the ‘Voice of the Bowling Green Hot Rods.’ Myers will continue to serve as the sports director at WCLU Radio, however.

Murnin has a lengthy resumé in sports broadcasting – mostly in baseball reporting. He has never called a basketball game, though he said he is grateful to begin with high school basketball in Kentucky.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to do four years and have two championship seasons here with the Hot Rods, and now I’m going to get to do Kentucky high school basketball in a place where they really love their local high school – out in Glasgow.”

Myers said Murnin will do a great job and touted his current position with the Hot Rods.

“Everybody is really going to enjoy his calls, he’s a terrific broadcaster, he handles the play-by-play for the Bowling Green Hot Rods,” said Myers. “He is going to do a wonderful job so he will not miss a beat, that much I can promise you.”

Murnin said he will follow the old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” by maintaining the format WCLU Radio listeners are used to for basketball broadcasts.

“I don’t want to change anything that he’s [Joe] done. He’s done this for two decades and obviously what he’s done has worked. Joe is somebody who is loved in that community for his ability to be a sportscaster,” Murnin said. “And if it worked for Joe, there’s no reason why I shouldn’t at least try it … so I don’t want to change anything as best I can.”

Bruce Trabue, who has been a color commentator for WCLU Sports for many years, will continue to provide analysis during games. Murnin said he is eager to work with him due to his experience with the process.

“I mean, it’s some big shoes to fill and it will make it a little bit easier being alongside people who know what they are doing,” he said. “Bruce and I have talked and were going to keep doing that as best we can.”

The first basketball broadcast is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 29. The broadcast will begin at 7:15 p.m. as the Glasgow High School Lady Scotties take on the Logan County Lady Cougars.
