Best of Barren scam circulating throughout community

GLASGOW — Several winners named by WCLU Radio and Forever Communications in this year’s “Best of Barren” contest fell victim to at least one scammer Friday who allegedly contacted them and tried to create a plaque for money.

The Best of Barren contest ended May 31, and winners of over 50 categories were announced Friday. Businesses were announced via social media but actual accolades from the radio station or its parent company were not immediately disbursed.

A caller identifying themselves with Forever Communications called several of the named winners with a solicitation — plaques for $130, according to reports made to the station and local authorities. The offer is not valid and the company has not contacted winners on an individual basis.

Bonafide correspondence from Forever Communications will not be made with individual winners over the phone. Accolades, which are no cost to the winners, will be distributed in the coming days.

Report potential offers like these to local authorities or message WCLU Radio via Facebook and Instagram or by emailing wcluradio@gmail.com.

All offers to create or produce a placard, certificate or any other accolade as a part of the Best of Barren contest should be considered fake and disingenuous.
