Glasgow News 1

For history lovers wanting to follow John Muir’s trek from the Louisville area to the Gulf of Mexico in the 1800s, a new trail is in the works — and it will pass through Glasgow.

“Our Cave Country Trails group is working on an official John Muir Trail, which will follow his path through Kentucky,” said MacLean Lessenberry, executive director of the Glasgow-Barren County Tourist and Convention Commission, during their October meeting. “That’ll be straight through Glasgow because he walked through Glasgow.

“That’s going to be exciting.”

Lessenberry said this would be a trail to follow in a vehicle, which would increase tourism for stops along the way.

“You could drive it and stop at all of the different attractions and things with signage — interpretive signage — where you’d be able to get out, learn about John Muir’s travels,” she said, adding that there is also a bicycle trail being developed as part of the project.

They recently met with a bicycle group from the Bowling Green area and had them go through all the preliminary trail layouts, Lessenberry said. The National Parks Service is also involved, though not currently with the federal government shutdown.

“They are going to be doing community input sessions beginning in January, most likely at the Weldon library in Glasgow and in Cave City,” Lessenberry said. “The big deal about it truly is the bicyclist part, but it’s going to link Abe Lincoln and Mammoth, so that will be a big deal for us with national park locations.

“That’s going to be moving forward. We’ve done branding for it, and I know some places are already working on signage for that, but that’ll be coming up.”

By MICHAEL CRIMMINS
Glasgow News 1

It’s not outside the realm of possibility to see a Kentuckian on the presidential ticket in 2028.

Recently, Governor Andy Beshear and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine sat down for a bipartisan discussion hosted by the University of Cincinnati’s Portman Center for Policy Solutions. During the discussion, which was entitled “Across the River and Across the Aisle,” Beshear said a 2028 presidential run is something he and his family will consider.

“What’s most important is that we have a candidate that can heal the country,” he said. “And so, if we think that might be me, it’s something we’ll consider. But if that is another candidate, I care much more about this country than I ever will about a title for myself.”

In 2019 and in 2023, Barren County voters voted against Beshear, according to the State Board of Elections and the Secretary of State’s official election results, which showed that Beshear received 5,280 votes in 2019 to Matt Bevin’s 7,693. Against former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, Beshear lost Barren County by almost 2,000 votes — Beshear received 4,965 votes to Cameron’s 6,918.

Beshear first received national attention when his name was mentioned as a possible vice president candidate to Kamala Harris.

The governor’s term ends in 2027. Beshear cannot run for reelection in 2027 as he has served two consecutive 4-year terms as Kentucky’s governor.

WCLU Sports

After a sluggish first half, Glasgow took control of its season-opening soccer match to beat Logan County, 3-1. The win punched the Scotties’ ticket to the second round of the 2A Sectional that will be played against Warren East next week.

The Cougars opened the scoring 22 minutes into the first half with a shot from outside the box. Nearly 14 minutes later Jared Malagon tied the game with a deep shot. Malagon returns from last season as Glasgow’s leading goal scorer, and the leading scorer in the 15th District.

Glasgow coach Ken Mahung said his team did not execute the “system” in the first half, and played without discipline after Logan scored the game’s first goal. That was the message he said he gave the team at the halftime break with the game tied ,1-1.

The second half was much better.

Daniel Rodriguez gave the Scotties the lead for good with 25:07 showing on the second-half clock when he deflected a ball into the net. Isaiah Ramos added the insurance goal with less than two minutes to play in the game.

For Glasgow News 1

The Cave City City Council special-called meeting Wednesday addressed vacant and deteriorating properties throughout town, with a discussion on raising taxes on such properties.

“This is a special taxing district,” explained City Attorney Bobby Richardson. “If there are dilapidated properties or properties that are tax delinquent for three years, and the city’s code enforcement identifies them, then the city will raise taxes on that property above the normal real estate rate.” In such cases, the tax would jump to 75 cents per $100 of assessed value — a steep increase from the current 14 cents.

Richardson noted that Horse Cave has already implemented a similar ordinance. Mayor Dwayne Hatcher said he spoke with Horse Cave Mayor Randall Curry ahead of the meeting, who described the ordinance as a success. “He said that with a couple properties they had to go to court,” Hatcher recounted. “But still, it was worthwhile.”

Councilwoman Leticia Cline expressed support, saying any action by property owners, whether cleaning up or selling, would ultimately generate more revenue for the city. The ordinance passed unanimously.

The council also revisited the topic of compensation for elected officials. Originally proposed at last month’s regular meeting by Councilman Ronald Coffey, the measure would increase council pay from $50 per month to $150 per meeting. Coffey said the current figure hasn’t changed since he served in the 1990s. The item was tabled at that time to explore other options, as any raise would not take effect until the next council term. Richardson contacted the Department of Local Government to see whether a cost-of-living increase could be applied immediately.

“This year, the cost of living increase is about three percent,” Richardson said. “I figured it up and it would be about $1.25 for the council and about $600 a year for the mayor, which I didn’t believe was worth the effort for this year.”

He added that the council must pass an ordinance setting salaries before May 2026. After brief discussion, the council agreed to move forward with Coffey’s original proposal.

The council also considered the mayor’s salary, which is currently $24,000 per year. Members agreed a raise was needed, voting to increase the salary to $40,000 annually. “It’s important to note that these salaries are for the positions,” Hatcher said. “They will not go into effect until after the next elections.” The raises were approved unanimously.

Councilwoman Beverly Ford also raised the idea of leasing a vehicle for the mayor. The city already leases vehicles for the police department through Enterprise, and the council discussed using the same provider to lease a midsized SUV. “Just looking at what we’ve done in the past, you’re looking at around $40,000 to $45,000,” Hatcher said. “So, monthly it would run about $1,000.” The council agreed to research the figures further and revisit the topic at next week’s regular meeting, which is Monday, Aug. 11.
