GLASGOW, KY  –  Barren County Jailer Aaron Shirley recently reported on a few things that have been developing at the Barren County Detention Center during Tuesday’s Barren County Fiscal Court meeting.  One of those items was the reception of a state grant for new washing machines.  To the surprise of Jailer Shirley, the detention center received additional appliances; more so than the jail applied for.  Shirley said the application process was somewhat lengthy, which is why the jail got a boost from the allocated funding.

Shirley’s efforts to apply for the grant saved the county somewhere between $35,000 and $37,000, by his estimation.  In all totality, the only cost incurred that was paid for with county tax funds, was the final electrical hook up.  By requesting specifications for the installation of the new units, Shirley was able to get approval for his maintenance staff to do the rest of the work.

Shirley noted that when the facility was constructed in 2011, additional hookups for other appliances had already been put into the design of the building, in preparation for growth.

The jail also recently had an inspection.  Like most detention centers, the inspection did note overpopulation.  Otherwise, the inspection was clean, in every sense of the word.
