BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (Aug. 21, 2020) – The expected traffic impacts in the District 3 area for Aug. 21 through Aug. 28  are listed below.

Monroe County

  • Construction of the Tompkinsville Bypass will continue. Folks in the community will notice signs placed in advance of the construction zones. Asphalt surfacing is nearing completion, guardrail and signs are also being installed along the new bypass. The bypass remains closed to traffic at this time and there may still be impacts to traffic at intersections with Edmonton Road (KY 163), Radio Station Road (KY 1049), Center Point Road (KY 100), Cave Springs Road, Capp Harlan Road (KY 3144), and Celina Road (KY 163). Flaggers may be present and Motorists should use caution in these areas.
  • A project to construct the permanent intersection of the new Tompkinsville Bypass and KY 163 Celina Road in Monroe County has created a long-term closure on KY 163 Celina Road. The closure began on July 7 and last for approximately two months. The closure is between KY 3144 Capp Harlan Road to near mile point 7 just south of Clark Estates Road. A signed detour using KY 3144 Capp Harlan Road and a section of the new bypass road is in place. Large Trucks and farm equipment should seek an alternate route. The entire bypass section is expected to open in the coming weeks.
  • KY 2768 Old Edmonton Road –  A project to repair the bridge deck on the KY 2768 Old Edmonton Road bridge over East Fork Barren River in Monroe County is expected to start next week. The bridge is expected to close Aug. 24 through Aug. 28. A detour using E Bushong Road and KY 163 will be in place. Local traffic and business access will be maintained, but the road will be closed at the bridge.

Warren County

U.S. 31-W Louisville Road (mile point 14.8 -16.3)- A preventive maintenance project is expected to begin on a section of U.S. 31-W Louisville Road in Bowling Green in Warren County next week.

A ”cape seal” application is being applied to U.S. 31-W Louisville Road near the bridge over Barren River (mile point 14.8) to near the U.S. 31-W intersection with KY 3225 River Street (mile point 16.3). Motorists can expect to drive on loose gravel in different areas that will get smoother as vehicles drive on it. That phase of the application process will last several days to a week. Motorists should obey the posted slower speed limit while this application is in process.

An asphalt layer will be applied as the final part of the project to give the roadway a smoother, less noisy ride. Lane closures are expected along the entire route of the project. Workers will be present close to moving traffic so it is imperative motorists stay focused and use caution while traveling through the work zone. The project is heavily dependent on weather conditions so the construction timeline could change.

Pavement preservation is high priority for roads throughout the state. With reduced resurfacing budgets, these projects are being used to prolong pavement life and quality at a fraction of a full resurfacing project. When finished, the cape seal will provide an extended lifespan for a stretch of road which would need complete resurfacing within the next few years, otherwise.
