May 1, 1980 – The Barren County Homemakers observed International Day with a special program given by Mr. and Mrs. Gillie Hyde describing their recent trip to Egypt.


Alben Shockley is the Gamaliel High School Valedictorian and Brian Anderson is the salutatorian. Both had perfect 4.0 averages. Alben’s was 4.098.80 and Brian’s was 4.098.04.


May 5, 1980 – Kay Foster Bennett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bennett, was crowned the 1980 Gardenia Queen at Centre College.


Odds & Ends were the winners of Mixed Softball tournament played last weekend. Runners up were Sky Dog Pups.


May 6, 1980 – Patty Dickson was the teller at Citizens Bank & Trust teller window to wait on the first customer of new drive in.


Owner Roger Brooks and Drive Jimmy Bingham turned a $20 entry fee into Big Bucks Sunday when their ’64 Chevalier finished 2nd in the 1/8 mile race at Beech Bend. Brooks won $1500 and Bingham won $500.


May 8, 1980 – The State Outdoor Archery Shoot is held at Barren River Rod and Gun Club. Bob Dunn, Beverly White, Wayne Nichols, and Mike Atkinson helped set up the club for competition.


May 9, 1980 – All District baseball tournament players were Clay Graves (Allen County, Don Johnson (BC), Keith Mansfield(GHS), Larry Glass (BC), Jeff Drippy (Allen County), Charlie Bunch (BC), Clint Meador (AC), Ron Ramsey and Joe Dice (GHS).


May 11, 1980 – Morris H. Batten is the manager of J. C. Penney’s in Glasgow.


May 12, 1980 – Willard Thompson is the president of the Glasgow Barren County Jaycees and Anita Pierce is the President of the Glasgow Barren County Layettes.


May 13, 1980 – New officers of the Scottie Band Parents are Tommy Lyons, President, W. T. and Lula Belle Doyle, 1st VP, Omar and Betty Barbour, 2ne VP, Marianna Irving, Treasurer, and Gail Kin slow, Secretary.


May 14, 1980 – Ellen Richardson will be presented in her Senior Recital by Ralph Hamilton on Sunday, May 18 at Lira B. Mitchell Clubhouse.


William Dean Greer is given a watch to celebrate 20 years of service with National Brush Company.


Glasgow Business Interiors opens at 215 W. Washington Street with co-owners Cindy Davis and Peggy Simmons. The firm sells office furniture and accessories.


May 15, 1980 – The Childrens’Chorus Grades 1-6 of the Glasgow Baptist Church presented its musical “Noah’s Ark”.


1980 Scottie Annual is dedicated to Hank Royse, Voice of the Scotties and in memory of Mollie Burris, who was fatally injured in an automobile accident last summer.


Four Barren one room schools plan a reunion in July – Black Walnut, Lyon, Freedom, and Murray.
 


May 20, 1980 – Robby Smith, 6th grader at Temple Hill, won the annual Spring Glen Page Spelling contest. He spelled peninsula correctly to win first prize of $50. Jennifer Sturgeon was second from Caverna and Gina Jones was 3rd from Happy Valley.


May 21, 1980 – GHS Cheerleaders for next season are Cathy Bray, Mary Wells, Kim Hall, Sondra Carol Childress, Kim Rice, Robin Kinslow, Laura Rudenga, Vickie Bunch, Kim Kennedy and Carolyn Redford.


May 22, 1980 – The home of Dr. and Mrs. Robert McKinley on Glenview Drive is on Glasgow’s “Open House in Kentucky” Tour.


May 23, 1980 – BCHS 1980 Valedictorian is Jeff Perkins and Kim Harlow is Salutatorian. GHS Valedictorian is Doris Smith and Salutatorian is Kim Kerley.


May 25, 1980 – Mary Jane Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Young, graduates from Sweet Briar College, a four year college in Virginia.


The Barren County Education Association honored three retiring teachers – Mrs. Ruby C. Frances, Mrs. Anna Rhodes, and Robert Conkin.


May 27, 1980 – The Carroll Redford, Jr. Family won a blue ribbon for the best dressed family Sunday at the First Christian Church celebrating their 150th anniversary.


Wayne Davis is elected 48th President of the 8,000 member Kentucky Jaycees.


May 29, 1980 – AD – Special at Log Cabin Nursery – Azaleas in many colors, Buy one at regular price and buy the second one at half price.

Kelly Jones and Mark Chaplin were recently selected as Mr. and Miss Eastern by fellow students at Eastern Elementary School.
