Community Calendar Event- Thursday, April 24, 2014

Today is the last day for nominations for Barren County High School parent representatives to the SBDM council for the 2014-2015 school year. Eligible parents may submit nominations by calling the high school at 651-6315.

There will be a blood drive at Wal-Mart in Glasgow today from 1PM to 6PM.  Look for the Red Cross Bus. All blood types are critically need.

Community Baby Safety Shower for expectant parents will be tonight from 5PM to 6:30PM at Columbia Avenue Church of Christ. For more information contact Vicki Poore at 270-651-8321 Extension 136.

Hart of Autism will meet every Thursday at 6:30PM at the Munfordville Baptist Church.  Educators and families interested in information, support and therapy for autism are invited and kids come too.

There will be a Global Fest Meeting every 4th Friday at the Bunch Center beginning at 6:30PM. Everyone is invited. Anyone interested in being of the Global Fest Committee is encouraged to attend.

There will be a Job Fair this Friday from 10AM to 3:30PM at the TJ Health Pavilion Community Center. Representatives from various employers, agencies and organizations will be present. There is still limited space for employers who would like to participate. There is no fee for setting up and Internet and electrical service are available & lunch will be provided. Metcalfe County's Head Start Preschool Open Enrollment will be this Friday, April 25 from 8AM to 5PM at the Child Development Center. Bring one proof of income and two of the child’s immunization records to the meeting. For more information or to schedule an appointment call 432-7236.

The Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library will have a Senior Computer Class, this Friday, April 25 at 1PM. The instructor will be Denise Bowles and the cost will be $5.

Turn in your unused or expired medication for safe disposal, this Saturday, April 26 from 10AM to 2PM at the Cave City Police Department.

The 6th Annual Shake Your Paw Ball will be this Saturday, April 26 at 7:30PM at Glasgow Country Club. There will be live music by The Unpredictable’s and a Silent Auction of works of local artists.

The 10th Annual Drive for a Cure will be this Saturday, April 26 at 10AM. There will be a Tractor Drive, both antique and modern to benefit Relay for Life in Hart County. The drive will begin in Horse Cave at Bale Warehouse #1 and return back to Horse Cave for lunch provided by Dairy Queen of Munfordville and a live auction. The cost will be $25 per tractor. All proceeds will be donated to American Cancer Society in memory of Silas Crain and in honor of Ricky and Sherry Waddell. For more information call 270-537-4652.

Glasgow First United Methodist Church will hold a blood drive in the Family Center from 1PM to 5PM Monday, April 28. There is a critical need for all blood types.

Dr. Stanley D. Sides of Cape Girardeau, Missouri will be the speaker at the South Central Kentucky Historical and Genealogical Society meeting this Thursday, April 24 beginning at 6PM at the Mary Wood Weldon Library. Dr. Sides began studying caves in the Mammoth Cave Region with the Cave Research Foundation in 1962. His current research emphasis is on Dr. John Croghan's experiment to treat tuberculosis in Mammoth Cave in the 1840's and the history of cave exploration and cave development in Flint Ridge.  He will be speaking on the "History of Diamond Caverns," which involves the Proctor, Gorin and Underwood Caves and will also discuss the tuberculosis experiment at Mammoth Cave.

The Red Cross Bus will be at Western Kentucky University in Glasgow on Tuesday, April 29 from 1:30PM to 5:30PM. All blood types are needed.

The Broadway office of South Central Bank in Glasgow will hold a blood drive in the Community Room, Tuesday, April 29 from 9AM to 1PM.  There is a critical need for all blood types.

A class in Silk Painting will be held at the Mary Wood Weldon Library on Thursdays beginning May1 and running through May 22.   The cost is $10 due at registration.

The 21st Annual James W. Barton Memorial Golf Classic, Kiwanis Golf Scramble will be Saturday, May 3 at the Fox Hollow Golf Course. Entry fee is $50 per person which includes Greens, Cart Fees and Lunch.   For more information call Jared Pursley at 646-8162 or Tommy Jackson at 659-0171.

The Barren River Welfare Association will hold their annual bake sale and adoption event on Saturday, May 3 beginning at 8am at the food entrance of the Glasgow Wal-Mart. There will be a great variety of baked goods such as cakes, pies, breads and homemade treats for the four legged family members. Donations of supplies for the shelter will also be accepted. All proceeds from the event will provide much needed funding for the Spay/Neuter Programs, vaccines and medicines for the shelter animals and there will be animals available for viewing and adoption at the event.  For more information call Krissie Coe Fields at 270-670-5170 or the shelter at 651-7297.

The 5th Annual Ely Drugs 5K Run, Walk and Children’s Fun Run Relay for Life Benefit will be Saturday, May 3 at 415 Happy Valley Road. Registration will begin at 7:30AM. The 5K Run will be at 9AM, 5K Walk at 9:05AM and the Children’s Fun Run after the completion of the 5K Run. The cost will be $5 for ages 12 and under and $15 for 5K runners and walkers who pre-register and $10 for ages 12 and under and $25 for runners and walker the day of the event. The Sixth Annual BCHS Student Art Exhibit will be held on Monday, May 5 from 4 to 6pm in the school auditorium.  Students are Peyton Linder, Hannah Wright, Savannah Bell, Emily England, Maggie Bellamy, Luke Button and Madison Bowden.

The Teen Flick movie this month at the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library is Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World.”  The movie will be shown on Tuesday, May 6 at 3:45pm.  Snacks will be provided.

There will be a Community Discussion regarding the Face of Aging, Aging Services and Long Term Care on Wednesday, May 7 at the Lera B. Mitchell Clubhouse from 10am to 12noon.  Hosted by the Barren River AAAIL and Lake Cumberland AAAIL. Let your voice be heard, let us know your thoughts on what changes need to be made and how we can better assist the needs of the community.

Hart County Chamber of Commerce presents a Small Business on May 8 from 9AM to 4PM at the Hart County Agriculture Center Fairgrounds in Munfordville.  This special free event is for individuals looking to start a business and those who are looking to improve and expand their current business operation.   There will be seminars and mini workshops during the day.  For more information or to register call 270-524-2892.

Caleb Capps Baseball Memorial Scholarship 5K Run/Walk will be Saturday, May 10 at 8AM in Edmonton. All proceeds fund the Caleb Capps Baseball Memorial Scholarship established at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky.

The 5th Annual Cruisin’ for a Dream Car Show will be Saturday, May 10 with registration beginning at 9AM to12PM. Registration is $15, which goes directly to benefit the Dream Factory. For more information call 270-646-0259.

The Far Off Broadway Players will present "The Fox on the Fairway" dinner theatre at Cave City Convention Center May 23 and 24. Buffet dinner starts at 6PM and show at 7PM. Call 270-773-3131 for ticket reservations by May 16. $30 ticket price covers buffet meal and the show.
