 COMMUNITY CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR Thursday, September 9, 2010

The South Green Elementary School-Based Decision Making Council will meet today at 3:30pm in the school library.  All meetings are open to the public and subject to the open meeting law.

Patty Hughes and Community Education are sponsoring a children’s’ Art Show at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. The show and reception will be from 2- 4 pm this Sunday. Mrs. Hughes’ young students will have their art on display for your viewing pleasure. Join us for a great time and see the fantastic work of local youth.  This is a FREE community event. All youth ages 6 -12 who have taken any of the Painting –Just for Kids classes can participate.  Today is the last day art will be accepted at the church.  Please call Patty Hughes at 651-8066 to enter your child’s work.

The next 2010 Friends of the Library meeting will be a brown bag “bring your own” lunch meeting today at 11:30 AM. The Labor Day weekend Book Sale and Silent Auction results are the primary topic of discussion.  Members and guests are welcome. Book donors are encouraged to bring books and media donations for the Spring 2011 Book Sale. Please check the Book Donations Guidelines at the library if you have questions.

The Barren County Family YMCA would have their monthly Kids Night Out Program this Saturday from 6:30 to 11:30pm.  Kids will enjoy pizza, swim time, maze time, craft time and inflatables followed by a movie and a snack. Pre-registration is recommended.  For more information call 651-9622.

Fire & Iron Station 76 Motorcycle Club will have their 1st Annual Charity Ride this Saturday leaving from Glasgow Fire Training Center on Beaver Trail Road in Glasgow.  Registration from 9:30am - 11:00am with kickstands up at 11:30am, the ride will be approximately 100 miles of scenic travel returning to the Training Center for food, fun and prizes included in price.  Entry fee will be $15 per bike/$10 per rider; all proceeds will go to charity.  For more info contact Buddy Steele at 270-779-8783 or Frank Duckett at 670-5904.

Hiseville Community Volunteer Fire Department and Modern Woodmen will host a Car-Truck- Tractor Show and Karaoke Contest this Saturday at the Hiseville Elementary School. Registration for vehicles is from 12 to 1pm and the entry fee is $10 per vehicle.  The fee for the Karaoke Contest is $10 per act and begins at 4pm.  For more information call 590-5588 or 576-5649.  Proceeds will go to the Hiseville Volunteer Fire Department for Fire Equipment.

 

The Barren County High School SBDM Council will meet in regular session this Monday, September 13 at 7 P.M. in the Media Center at the Trojan Academy.  This meeting is open to the public.
 
The Hart County Retired Teachers Association will be having its September meeting this Tuesday, September 14th, at the fellowship hall of the Horse Cave Baptist Church, beginning at 5:30 pm.  The meeting will be a potluck meal.  The guest for the evening will be the County winner for the AARP Grandparent essay contest for last year and Hart County State Representative, Dottie Sims, who will speak to us concerning the State legislation.  Please make plans to attend if at all possible.

Barren River Cloggers will be starting new classes at Glasgow High School this Monday, September 13. The first 12 weeks of class are free. After the 12 weeks it will be $3 a person or $5 a household or family. Come enjoy the fun of learning to clog and all the events, festivals, and other activities we go to.

Beginning Digital Photography II will be held on Tuesdays beginning this Tuesday, September 14 and run through October 5 from 6 to 8ppm at WKU, Glasgow Campus.  You will learn the ins and outs of the Digital SLR Camera and basic photographic techniques; photo composition and more.  Bring with you a Digital SLR Camera and a desire to learn.  The instructor is Harold Kelley and the cost is $40.  Pre-register by calling Marcus Kingrey at 678-4004.

American Red Cross Blood Drive will be held on Wednesday, September 15 from noon to 6pm at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital, 4th floor classroom and also from 1:30 to 5:30pm at Western Kentucky University, Glasgow Campus in the multipurpose room.

Barren River Lake’s 23rd annual Trashmaster’s Classic Lakeshore Cleanup will be held on Saturday, September 18 from 8am until 12noon.  All volunteers will meet at Bailey’s Point, Walnut Creek, Narrows, State Park, Beaver Creek and the Peninsula.  Music will be provided by Small Talk, featuring Collin Hancock and Derek Keith from 12 to 3pm at the Barren River Resort State Park Beach.  Litter Bags will be provided.  For more information call 646-2055.


A Basic Computer Class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning September 21 and run through September 30th at the North Jackson Elementary School. The instructor is Ron Bowman and the cost is $25.  You must pre-register by calling Marcus Kingrey at 678-4004.

 

The Glasgow Film Society will present “The Searchers” considered to be one of the greatest westerns ever made and is a movie named by the Library of Congress to their National Film Registry on Monday, September 20 at 6:30pm at the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library. Directed by John Ford and starring The Duke, John Wayne, with a tremendous cast of supporting players, this is a film you won’t want to miss. Your host John Hitchcock will share interesting history and movie trivia that takes you behind the scenes and will lead the post show discussion. The 2010-2011 season for Glasgow Musicale kicks off on September 21 at 6:00 PM at The Landing, 6641 Scottsville Road, Glasgow, KY with the theme of “Bluegrass and BBQ”. This is one of the few events that require a paid reservation as it is a dinner and fundraiser. There will be a barbecue buffet and members hosted dessert bar with music by the multi-talented Bob and Joanna Harvey and lively tunes by The Forrester Family. The cost is a nominal $15.00 per person with paid reservations sent to Treasurers Eldon and Faye Smith at “Glasgow Musicale”, P O Box 2313, Glasgow, KY 42141-2043. Mark your calendar, write your check and make your reservation now as seating is limited.

A blood drive will be held at Summer Shade Elementary School in the lunchroom on Tuesday, September 21 from 3 to 7pm.  All Blood types are critically needed, especially Type O.

AARP and Landshark Shredding Truck is offering free paper shredding on Saturday, September 25 at K-Mart in Glasgow from 10am until 1pm.   Bring all outdated documents and papers.  Plastic and cardboard can not be shredding. 

Great Strides Walk, Chili Supper and Live Auction for cystic fibrosis will be held at Red Cross Elementary School on Saturday, September 25th. Walk begins at 4:30, Chili Supper at 5, and live auction begins at 6. Everyone is invited to attend! For more information call 270-678-5955.

Riverview at Hobson Grove will present the program “Dr. Lillian South “on Thursday, September 16 at 10:30am. Dr. South was a trailblazing female bacteriologist and Eileen Starr, architectural historian and author will discuss the turn of the century Bowling Green native. An Acrylic Painting Class will begin on Thursday, September 23 and run through September 28 from 9am until 11am at the First Christian Church in Glasgow.  Classes are open to anyone 12 years and older and who have a desire to paint.  The instructor is John Wing and the cost is $38 plus a $2 lab fee.  Pre-registration is required by calling Marcus Kingrey at 678-4004.

Paying for College 101 will be held on Monday, September 27 from 6 to 7pm at the Glasgow Campus of WKU. The presenter will be Gene Weis, KHEAA Outreach Counselor. Presentation will involve details on the Financial Aid Process and including information on types and sources of aid, time frames and deadline dates on the application process. This is a free event.


Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members assist their families, neighbors, or co-workers after a disaster strikes until trained first responders can reach their location, and before a disaster strikes by giving out preparedness materials and helping their neighbors be prepared. Team members maintain and refine their skills by participating in exercise and activities, as well as attending supplemental training opportunities offered by sponsoring agencies and others. A General Welding Class will be held on Mondays and Wednesday beginning October 11 from 5:30 to 8:30pm at the Barren County Area Technology Center.  Students will have hands on applications of all major welding processes, using welding shop equipment.  The instructor is Jeff Berryman and the cost is $125 if 14 people enroll.  Your must pre-register by calling Jeff Berryman at 651-2196 or 361-1081.

A PowerPoint Class will be held on Thursdays beginning October 14 at WKU Glasgow Campus from 5:30 to 7:30pm.  Master the basics of the world’s most popular presentation software. A class in Intermediate Excel will be held on Thursdays beginning October 14 at the Red Cross Elementary School at 7:30pm.  The class will cover protecting your workbook, filters, Macros, more graphs, sub totals, calculations and more. Painting Just For Kids will be held on Thursday, October 14, October 21, October 28 and November 4 from 4:30 to 6pm at the First Presbyterian Church.  The class is for kids’ age 6 to 12 years of age.  The instructor is Patty Hughes and the cost is $30.  You must pre-register by calling Marcus Kingrey at 678-4004.


The Mane Event presented by New Beginnings Therapeutic Riding, Inc will be held on Saturday, October 16 at the WKU AG Expo Center in Bowling Green beginning at 10am. The cost per person is $10 and children under six enter free.  Proceeds will benefit the students of New Beginnings.  New Beginnings Mission is to serve individuals with disabilities by enhancing their lives using the process of horses.  For more information call 782-6496.
