Foodies flock to Kentucky for its eclectic dining scene, which offers everything from haute cuisine in elegant hotel restaurants to outstanding down-home fare at diners and even truck stops. There’s never been a more exciting time to dine around Kentucky, where hip new restaurants thrive along with decades-old favorites.

To satisfy your hunger for food adventure, get off the beaten path and explore out-of-the-way spots. Where to start? You could follow the lead of national cable-TV food programs that recently have featured Kentucky eateries.

For starters, take Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Guy has sampled po-boys at Rick’s White Light Diner in Frankfort and fried chicken at Lexington’s Parkette Drive In. He’s also visited Virgil’s Cafe in Bellevue and Smokey Valley Truck Stop in Olive Hill to see what just-plain-folks are eating on a given day.

The celebrity chef has also rubbed shoulders with local horse people munching sandwiches at Midway’s Wallace Station bistro-bakery and chowed down on spicy pulled pork barbecue at J.J. McBrewster’s American Smokehouse in Lexington.

Another popular program, “Food Paradise,” has hit the Bon-Ton Mini Mart in Henderson for a chicken shack experience and sat down for a family-style meal of fried chicken and home-cooked vegetables at Claudia Sanders’ Dinner House in Shelbyville.


Louisville’s burgeoning foodie scene has been the focus of several shows that have spotlighted trendy restaurant rows of East Market Street, Bardstown Road and Frankfort Avenue. “Bizarre Foods America” has visited Garage Bar for hominy and other Kentucky classics, 610 Magnolia for a six-course prix fixe menu and Wagner’s Pharmacy for fried bologna sandwiches and other unique dishes popular with patrons of nearby Churchill Downs.
