Metcalfe County Schools receive $100,000 grant!

Metcalfe County High School, is the recipient of a $100,000 National Breakthrough School planning grant that will focus on personalized learning.

Planning grants represent an important early stage investment and incubating opportunity. [The] announcement of the planning grants follows a rigorous selection process that identified the most promising school visions and leadership teams. Metcalfe County was one of eight national grantees selected from a pool of more than 90 applicants from across the country. Awards signal confidence in a plan’s viability as well as in the grant recipient’s ability to implement it. The awards are all part of NGLC’s larger initiative, launched two years ago, to work with innovative educators and organizations to design and launch new or redesigned schools reflecting personalized, competency-based, blended learning approaches.

Metcalfe County Schools Superintendent Dr. Benny Lile responded to the news. “This will be a great compliment to the existing Race to the Top grant MCHS is participating in.  I know Jessica Lindsey who assists with our district grant applications put a lot of effort into this.  It is good to see it pay off.”

MCHS will use the funds to begin to explore alternate delivery models of education through blended digital learning.   The grant paves the way for a school day to look much different in the future than it does now.  Students will potentially be able to take more and different electives than have been offered in the past.  The grant may also provide the opportunity to look at the school day schedule in a fresh and innovative way.  “There is really no limit to what we can explore doing with all the possibilities this brings us” said Sexton.  “A school day in the future may look very different than it does now.   Personalized digital learning helps us to escape some of the current entrapments of time and space.”
