A Bowling Green man and woman were taken into custody last night after authorities were called in to investigate the abuse to a 2 year old child.

The Bowling Green Police Department received a call from the Medical Center early yesterday morning, just before 1:00 am stating they were treating a child with head trauma.  Police responded and were told by the custodian, who had brought the child in to be seen, that the injuries were of an accidental nature.  During the investigation, the injuries were determined to be inconsistent with the custodian's statement.

Police have now arrested 19 year old Austin M. Searles, and 24 year old Penny Hicks, both of Bowling Green.  Searles faces charges of ASSAULT 1ST DEGREE and CRIMINAL ABUSE 1ST DEGREE.  Hicks, the mother of the two year old child, faces charges of ASSAULT 1ST DEGREE and CRIMINAL ABUSE 1ST DEGREE COMPLICITY.  A complicity charge means she was aware the abuse and took no action.
