With mandatory 10-digit dialing for local calls less than three weeks away, it makes sense to start practicing now.  Not only will this help you make the transition on February 1st, it will also allow telecommunication providers time to prepare and test equipment in advance.

The new 10-digit dialing process is very simple:  for any local call, simply dial 270 before the telephone number. We asked Andrew Melnykovych, with the Kentucky Public Service Commission, if it really was that simple:

The new area code will not change any current area code 270 telephone numbers and will be required for both landline and wireless phones.  11-digit dialing refers to long distance calls only, where dialing a ‘1’ before the area code will still be required as Melnykovych explains:

The new 10-digit dialing will go into effect on February 1st of this year.
