November 1973

November 1, 1973 – Handling the captain’s chore for the Tompkinsville Bears football team this season have been Joe Tooley, Mack Kendall and Paul Brown. Coach is Frank Petett. Picture from the past showed Glasgow Police Department and City officials shortly before WW II. They were Pate Walkup, J M Cravens, Wade Moran, Phillip Wilson, City Attorney, Police Chief Guy Bowles, Geo. J. Ellis, Jr., City Judge, Charlie Ryan Luther Lowe and Jake Eatman.

November 2, 1973 – Robert Eaton, president of SCRTC spoke to the largest crowd ever to attend an annual meeting of the telephone coop at Caverna High School.

November 5, 1973 – Darrell Florence is named Barren County Schools Assistant Super. Carroll Furlong replaces Florence as Park City Principal. Mrs. Golda Walbert is named as supervisor and director of Title 1 Program.

November 6, 1973 – Voter turnout is light in Barren County precincts.

November 7, 1973 – Winners in the election were W D Byrd, Jr. Hiseville Police Judge, Robert Bishop, Stanley Steen, Charles Elmore, Roy Milburn, and John Robert Miller are newly elected Magistrates. John Edd Bowles won the Constable race.

November 8, 1973 – Trojan Appreciation night is held with BCHS Booster Club heading the event. Officers are Treasurer Bernice Shelton, Projects Director Kenneth Evans, President Clyde Salley, VP C G Morrison and Secretary, Brenda Perkins.

November 9, 1973 – Glasgow Barren County Chamber of Commerce voted in a special meeting to forego the lighting of the Christmas tree decorations this year, believing the energy crisis in our country is serious.

November 12, 1973 – AD – Pizza Villa – Smorgasbord Lunch Monday thru Friday 11:30 til 1:30 $1.50. Ken Noe and Mike Martin, Owners.

November 13, 1973 – Restoration of an old Civil War Fort and provisions for 12,000 grave spaces were among the plans of the City of Glasgow after narrow passage of an ordinance authorizing the $100,000 purchase of the Old Fort property.

Barren County Trojan basketball season opens against Gamaliel at the National Guard Armory – Ronnie Turner, Randy Salley, Roger Mizel, Mark Woodcock, Kenny Newsome, Woody Turner, Dennis Tobin, Ronnie Trivett, Doug Hunt, Dennis Owens, John Childress, John Kinslow, Donald Short. Managers are Donnie McCoy, Ronnie Melton and Lynn Estes. Coach is Randy Swann and Assistant is Jim Shartzer.

November 15, 1973 -  AD – Pre Christmas Get Acquainted Sale, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Treasure Chest Gift Shoppe in Cave City. GHS Scotties and Hiseville Cardinals open their seasons tonight. ( Glasgow won 74-69).

November 19, 1973 – Two Ohio men are killed when their light plane crashed on the farm of J R Richardson near Bon Ayr.

November 20, 1973 – Mrs. Irene Nielson is the Volunteer of the month of the TJ Samson Community Hospital Auxiliary.

November 23, 1973 – Park City Bears open their season with Hiseville. Head coach is Sonny Oliphant, Assistant Coach is Charles Hopkins. Players are Mike Mitchell, Randy Gardner, Jerry Gibson, Neal Toms, David Campbell, Les Johnson, Wayne Shelton, Phil Harp, Phil Toms, and Ronnie Miller.

November 26, 1973 – Two prominent citizens have died. Metcalfe County School Superintendent Thomas Rhea Butler, and Bryan Woods Strader, Jr., VP and Managers of Strader’s Farms.

November 27, 1973 – Glasgow’s opening day burley averages $85.91 on 992,958 pounds.

November 29, 1973 – Leslie Harlow has assumed the position of Manager at Jerry’s Restaurant. He is also part owner.

November 30, 1973 – The firm of Gregory, Taylor and Rutledge CPAs moved this week into their new office building at 101 McKenna Street.
