The Elizabethtown City Council has appointed a successor to Mayor Tim Walker, who died June 14 after a heart attack.

Edna Berger was appointed Monday to complete Walker's term, which has about a year and a half left. The general election is in November 2014.

The News-Enterprise said the situation was unprecedented in the city's 216-year history. All previous mayors finished their terms, and no one had been appointed to the position.

Berger is a 68-year-old businesswoman and member of the City Council. The council will select a replacement to complete Berger's term.

Walker was 54 when he died. He had been a firefighter and councilman before becoming mayor in 2010.
