DID LAST NIGHT'S FISCAL COURT MEETING END THE JAIL REPORT DEBATE? PDF Print

By all indications, the nearly year-long issue of the Private Investigation of the Barren County Detention Center was put to rest at last night’s Barren County Fiscal Court Meeting.  Despite his consistent effort to prevent the public from viewing and listening to the full report conducted by Mike Ober, Magistrate Chris Steward made the motion to put the report on the county’s website for anyone to hear or read the interviews and summaries in the full report which rendered Ober’s opinion that the jail was being run like “a good ol’ boys club”.  Magistrate Carl Dickerson seconded the motion with the understanding it would not cost any money to publish and upload the report to the county’s website.

Steward says a select few media members should not be the only ones allowed to access the report.

Magistrate John Benningfield told the court that it’s time for the county to move forward after many months on the issue.

The vote was a tie with Magistrates John Benningfield, Billy Houchens, Tommy Matthews and Judge-Executive Greer voting against publishing the report on the county’s website and Magistrates Chris Steward, Carl Dickerson, Gary Gillon, and Ricky Spillman voting for the motion made by Steward.

The tie vote means the motion failed to pass the approval of the fiscal court and the county will not publish and upload the summaries and recorded interviews on it’s website.  However, according to Judge-Executive Greer, anyone who wants the report can access the report in the form of a thumb drive.  Any citizen that requests the report will be charged a $15 fee for the cost of the thumb drive and transferring the information.
