The U.S. Department of Education announced Tuesday that Green River Regional Educational Cooperative is one of 16 applicants from across the country that has won the 2012 Race to the Top-District competition. This is the first time the Department has offered Race to the Top funds to districts, which will share nearly $400 million to support locally developed plans to personalize and deepen student learning, directly improve student achievement and educator effectiveness, close achievement gaps, and prepare every student to succeed in college and their careers. Green River Regional Educational Cooperative, which is a consortium of 35 school districts in 26 counties is expected to receive a federal grant of about $40 million to implement its local reform plans.
The school districts included in the Green River Cooperative are Adair County Allen County Barren County Bowling Green Breckinridge County Butler County Campbellsville Caverna Clinton County Cloverport Daviess County Edmonson County Elizabethtown Glasgow Grayson County Green County Hancock County Hardin County Hart County LaRue County Logan County Meade County Metcalfe County Monroe County Muhlenberg County Cumberland County Ohio County Owensboro Russell County Russellville Simpson County Taylor County Todd County Trigg County Union County Warren County West Point Western Kentucky University
