Governor Steve Beshear yesterday announced a $500,000 grant for the creation of a new senior center for Green County senior citizens.

Lieutenant Governor Jerry Abramson made the announcement Tuesday night during the Green County Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet at Green County Middle School in Greensburg.

The grant will allow the city to renovate a downtown building at 106 West Court St., The renovation of the building will aid the city in revitalizing its downtown, as well as preserving a central building within the Downtown Greensburg Historic District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Seniors currently use the local Veterans’ Memorial Hall, which  is occupied by numerous other county groups and high school sports teams. Under the arrangement, seniors are limited to just one room at that location, and if the room is scheduled for another activity, local seniors must clear that room and remove all of their items each time.

More than 17 percent of the population of Green County are residents 65 and older. Greensburg Mayor Lisle Cheatham tells WCLU Local News…
